Britain's nuclear deterrent system, Trident, comes up for renewal next year. Parties are at odds over whether to carry on with four Vanguard-class submarines, which have been patrolling the seas since 1984.

With rising diplomatic tensions between Russia and the West and the rise of Islamic State, the world stage remains remarkably tense. The Conservatives have now warned that Labour would leave the country "open to nuclear blackmail by rogue states" because Ed Miliband is “so desperate for power” he is willing to “barter Britain's national security".
